人は民主主義について、かつてマハトマ・ガンジーが西洋文明について述べたことを繰り返したいという誘惑に駆られる、とイマニュエル・ウォーラーステインの論文は語る。「ミスター・ガンジー、西洋文明をどう思いますか」と聞かれた彼は、「それは良い考えであったかもしれない」と答えた。ドクメンタ11の主催者は、今日の芸術的実践の要件として民主主義の運命と未来をおいて、より重要なトピックはない、ということを認識するだけの賢明さを持っていた。今日の芸術は、ゆるやかな意味での「民主主義的」なものへとますます向かっている。すなわち、よりさまざまな生活様態のもとにあるより多くの人びとがアートを実践することが可能になり、その主題も急激に民主主義的なものへと変わってきた。アーティストがある主題のまわりに張り巡らすことの出来る不可視の象徴的枠組みは、どのようなものであれ、それを「芸術作品」として認めることが可能である。その一方で、「アートの世界」はあいかわらず、これ以上ないほど排他的な「倶楽部」のままで、そこで通用している言葉は貴重かつ純化され、金と市場によってかつてないほど徹底的に侵食されている。ドクメンタ11は、民主主義に関する未だ実現されていない可能性の現時点での目録を作ろうとしている。しかし私は、民主主義の紆余曲折を語ることをもって、キック・オフすることにしたい。なぜなら、可能性の目録は、その反対物である―民主主義の「不可能性」―との差し迫った遭遇なくしては、作り上げることが難しいからである。この文章の最後で、私は、簡単に、なぜこの「不可能性」こそが民主主義を救済している美点になりうるのかについて語ろうと思う。しかし、私たちがこの贖罪を行う前に、その顔に表れているマイナスの部分を私によく見つめさせて欲しい。
