Collaboration with the University of Western Australia Featured in Partners in Excellence
Our laboratory’s long-standing collaboration with the University of Western Australia (UWA) was featured in Partners in Excellence: The Go8’s long-standing relationship with Japan, published by Australia’s Group of Eight (Go8) in 2024. The publication highlights examples of research cooperation between Australian universities and their Japanese partners.
Under the heading “WA lupins for wagyu cattle in Japan”, the article introduces the collaboration between Professor Hiroya Kadokawa of Yamaguchi University and Emeritus Professor Graeme Martin of UWA’s Institute of Agriculture. Building on 20 years of joint research into the reproductive physiology of ruminants, they explored the potential benefits of supplementing the diets of Japanese Black cattle with lupin grain from Western Australia.
The project began with a visit to Yamaguchi University by Professor Martin and Dr Stacey Rietema to learn Professor Kadokawa’s techniques for the in vitro culture of bovine and ovine pituitary and ovarian cells. The findings suggested the potential for importing Western Australian lupin grain for use in Japan’s livestock industry.
The collaboration received partial funding from Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and also included exploration of opportunities for postgraduate student exchange. The article notes that cooperation between Yamaguchi University and UWA is supported by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2015.
We are pleased that this long-standing collaboration was included among the examples of Australia–Japan research cooperation presented in the Go8 publication.

Partners in Excellence: The Go8’s long-standing relationship with Japan
