上川先生は、高校英語教諭を経て、シカゴ大学で教育学博士号を取られ、Washington DCで教育統計学関係の企業にお勤めです。日本人の英語発音が英語母語話者と何か違うと思われていましたが、滞日体験があるジーナ・ジョージ先生から、日本人は喉を発音に使っていないという指摘を受け、「英語喉　50のメソッド」三修社を共著で出版されました。このたび上川先生の郷里広島県に御帰国のついでに、御講演いただきました。当日は100人以上の参加者があり、盛況だったと思います。

Introduction of Eigonodo Approach

Our talk will be about the new method of teaching English pronunciation for Japanese learners of English.  Based on several years of observation, the two authors found that if Japanese people utilize their throat in a more relaxed way, they can pronounce almost any sounds that exist in western languages.  In contrast, when they focused too much on tongue position or mouth shape (instead of throat), their English becomes an exaggerated version of Katakana sounds.  We also teach Japanese learners of English the concept of syllables.  Syllables were never taught in Japan.  When Europeans teach other European languages among themselves, the concept of syllables is so fundamental that they do not even have to teach it.  Anyone notices the word “McDonalds’” consists of 3 syllables.  This is not very obvious for Japanese. We discovered an easy way to teach exactly this.  Basically, we teach students to create a cluster of C-V-C (consonant-vowel-consonant) and connect clusters in a smooth way.  For example, the word wasabi should be pronounced was-sab-bi in European languages.  The effect of knowing the throat and syllables is particularly dramatic with listening comprehension skill of learners.  Our talk will be about the basics of our approach and stories behind the discovery.
