ほ乳類における嗅覚を介したコミュニケーションは、異性の識別、母子の絆、他個体の生理状況の把握など、より複雑系の情報把握を担う。本セッションでは、マウスなどのほ乳類におけるフェロモン現象に着目し、分子レベル、神経生理・薬理レベル、そして脳・行動レベルでの受容メカニズムを議論する。

ヒトは匂いや香りによって多大な心理生理作用を受ける。昆虫や他のほ乳類と違って、ヒトにとっての香りは、コミュニケーションのための情報因子という役割より、QOLを高めるための存在意義が高い。本セッションでは、生理活性物質としての香りの心理生理作用に着目し、応用面をみすえた香りの有効性を議論する。

植物では、害虫の攻撃や病原菌の感染により引き起こされる防御応答の制御に揮発性物質やその関連物質が生体内はもちろん個体間でもシグナル物質として重要な役割を担っている。本セッションでは、それらシグナル物質の生理機能、生合成、情報伝達機構に関する研究の現状と課題について議論する。

植物は様々な化合物を認識することによって外界環境をモニターしている。最近になって揮発性化合物もそうした生態系モニターに寄与していることが明らかになってきた。本セッションでは揮発性化合物を介した植物?植物相互作用の実体を明らかにし、更にその分子機構を討論する。
