Managements of surgeries, procedures and examinations which are performed in the operation theater
Overview
The Operating Theater Service(OTS) is a section which provides a safe environment, not only for surgical operations, but also for invasive procedures such as central vein catheter placements, bone marrow donation and electric convulsive therapy. The OTS is a central section where all departments participate.
Equipment in the operating theater
There are 16 operating rooms including 3 biologically clean rooms. Each room has its own different function, because various operations are performed in the operating theater. Usually, 13 rooms are available for scheduled surgery. 2 rooms are for day surgery. Emergency operations can be performed anytime. Intraoperative information can be relayed to the multipurpose room, the laboratory and the measurement supervisory room for education, safety control and reporting.
Safety management
(1) Preoperative and postoperative visits
Theater nurses visit all preoperative patients to inquire about the desires or needs of patients and anxieties of their families on the day of the operation since March 2005. Theater nurses also visit postoperative patients to assess patient’s physiological recovery and psychological status.
(2) Safety management for the prevention of medical accidents
- 1. Prevention of patient misidentification
- 2. Prevention of dislocation in surgical site

- 5. Prevention of lost of surgical specimens
- 6. Prevention of skin damage due to electric scalpels

We drew up manuals to help make it easier for all medical workers to strictly adhere to the above preventive measures. Especially, the foot pump to prevent deep venous thrombosis and the body pressure dispersed mat to prevent skin damage and nerve injuries are offered to all patients as much as possible for safety purposes.
Team healthcare
Many staff members such as surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and clinical engineers cooperate to perform successful surgery in the operating theater. Moreover, operations are performed safely and smoothly in co-operation with the clinical laboratory, the blood transfusion department, and the radiology department.
